47 Meters Down
Just when you thought it was safe...
This tense adventure boasts some superb underwater photography and puts British director Johannes Roberts on the map as a new talent. He previously made small independent thrillers like Storage 24 and F before he hit the big time in America with this film.
Sisters Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt) are having an idyllic holiday in Mexico when they meet two attractive locals who persuade them to join them for a cage diving experience amongst great white sharks. All goes smoothly under the watchful eye of Captain Taylor (Matthew Modine), until the cage suddenly breaks away from the boat...
Mandy Moore and Claire Holt wrestle with some stilted dialogue as they try to survive against the odds, surrounded by sharks and with their oxygen running out. Most of the action takes place underwater – curiously filmed at Basildon Studios – and is suitably dark and claustrophobic, if not as exciting as last year’s The Shallows.
