Sleeping With Other People
Confident if predictable sexcom in which two sex addicts – and previous lovers – strike up a platonic friendship.
Every other movie these days is based on a true story but rest assured that this harmless but unmemorable sex comedy is not one of them. Jake (Jason Sudeikis) and Lainey (Alison Brie) lose their virginity to each other in college. Fast forward to the present day – Jake & Lainey accidentally bump into each other at a sex addicts’ meeting in New York City. They are both dissatisfied with their current relationships and they instantly renew their friendship despite the fact that they haven’t seen each other for twelve years. They talk candidly about their sex encounters and provide solid support for each other in their search for the perfect partner...
Sudeikis and Brie have been upgraded to leading role status following years of playing second fiddle to others. They share an effortless charm and appear to be enjoying Leslye Headland’s upfront dialogue, particularly about sex. Headland’s second feature following Bachelorette (2012) is directed with assurance and is written with efficiency despite the fact that most supporting characters are verging on the stereotypical, particularly Adam Scott as a philandering gynaecologist. Overall, it is a mixed bag and you can see the ending coming a mile off.
