James Cameron-Wilson Looks Back at the Year of 2017

It is not often that a horror film receives such critical accolades, but Get Out has broken the mould. However, the Franco-Belgian Raw, from the Paris-born Julia Ducournau, also received raves and singled out 2017 as a rather good year for the genre, reinforced by the favourable reception afforded the camp and crazy Happy Death Day. It was also an extremely strong twelve months for female filmmakers, with my top film slot going to Katell Quillévéré's sublime Heal the Living, while Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit and Julia Ducournau’s Raw hover just outside my Top Ten. And let us not forget that Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman has now become the highest-grossing live-action feature ever directed by a woman.
